Presso Espresso Machine Review

I got this beauty about 2-3 weeks ago so I had to play with it a bit before I decided to review. The first few shots were not good at all to be honest. I tried to use the manufacturers plastic spoon/tamper and it yields poor results...no crema whatsoever! I was a little disappointed to say the least. So I did a little research online to see where I may be going wrong. Here's a list of things I've done to end up with great espresso and lots of crema:

1. I built a tamper @ work from aluminum. I made it almost exactly size for size with the basket (51mm diameter) so no grind sits on the wall of the basket after tamping. This also helps you stay level when tamping. If there is more clearance you may tamp off level and your shot will be uneven. You need a good tamper. I cannot stress this enough. Check out Reg Barber. I made mine with the C Flat shape to account for the indent for the snap ring that holds the basket to the PFilter body.

2. I cut the bottom off the stock PFilter (bottomless PF) to get feedback on my tamping technique. I found this the most worthy modification as it shows you whats going on with the shot, plus the crema you get is unreal. There is more oxygen hitting the coffee as it leaves the basket in turn giving you great crema.

3. I made a funnel for the PFilter so i can use the WDT method of dosing the PFilter. Then I chop and level the grind. Then tamp. Check out WDT online. It removes all the clumps from the grind so no air pockets and no cracks in the puck. All you need is a funnel (i used the bottom of a multivitamin container) and a bamboo skewer or any thin stick type object.

4. I overfill the water container past the 2 shot line, then I pull the arms to the top and pull down 1 time and hold at the bottom for about 5-10 secs...ive seen ppl pull down, then pull back up and go for a 2nd pull...i think this ruins the shot...there will be excess water in the canister, so once u remove your cup, then replace with another and toss the excess.

I would give this a 5 rating, but i had to make some changes and additions to get great, consistent shots. I recommend the presso to anyone who loves to tinker around with things. It will make great shots, you just need to be persistent.

I paid 75 bucks new...i got lucky.

I have had this unit since 1997, it should last forever.
We use it for making iced tea and coffee at least once but mostly twice a day.
We have it on a $15.00 appliance timer so the water is not heated between 10pm and 6am (it only takes
15 mins to heat up the tank if it is off) I make coffee at 6:30am it takes 5 mins
to make a pot (I can make as little as 4 cups) then I turn it off till the evening when
we make tea. I got tired of buying the $20 coffee pots that only last a year.

La Pavoni EPBB-8 Europiccola 8-Cup Lever Style Espresso Machine, Black Base Review

La Pavoni EPBB-8 Europiccola 8-Cup Lever Style Espresso Machine, Black Base
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

PHOOEY to those who say this is only for the purists! Stuff and nonsense! The possibility for a more delightful relationship with a machine than a man can have with his La Pavoni espresso machine surely doesn't exist outside an Arthur C. Clarke novel. I really can think of no other mod con which is truly indispensible in the way that Ralph, our little Europiccola, is.

Difficult to use? Pshaw! Is a bicycle difficult to use? At first maybe, but all of a sudden you wonder what the fuss was about. With a little practice - and practice is half the fun of it - you will have the most beautiful espresso - thick crema and all - merrily widdling out the little spout everytime.

Ralph is delightfully simple to use, as a matter of fact: water in, turn on, coffee in, lever up, lever down, and you're done. How hard can that be?

Getting your espresso right comes down to a lot of other variables, which are the same for any espresso machine - the sort of coffee you use, the correct grind, the correct grinder (if you grind yourself, the grinder is really critical) the correct pressure, even the type of water you put in the machine. If you're having trouble grinding your own then head down to the grocers, pick up a tin of Illy coffee, and BINGO - you may as well be in a Palazzo San Giovanni with a pair of smart sunnies and a scooter shouting, "prego" at passers by, that's how Italian you'll feel. And the coffee is divine.

Honestly, the very sight of that cute little chappie sitting, glinting on our bench every morning, ready to gladden the very experience of waking up and getting ready for work is enough to make my heart sing. I love my little La Pavoni. You'll love yours, too. Depend on it. I know I do.

Rancilio Silvia Semi Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Rancilio Silvia Semi Automatic Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This machine is the perfect blend of quality, durability, and ease of repair for a home machine under $500. It makes espresso that rivals any you can buy at a coffee house.
I've been making home espresso for 25 years and have used many different machines of various prices which all died. I bought one for $250 from Starbucks which died in one year. They told me parts were not available. This machine is practically bullet-proof. I've had it for over 5 years and it is still running like new. Sure it hurts to spend this much on an espresso machine, but how many $250 machines will you go through? Learn from my mistake(s) and get a good one.
All the parts inside are commercial or semi-commercial grade. Anyone who works on commercial espresso machines can work on this one, and the parts are readily available. It's all stainless and cast iron. Very nice.
It has a 3-way solenoid, which you want, trust me. The 3-way solenoid lets pressure escape from the basket when you switch off the pump so that the coffee grounds fall out of the portafilter handle in a solid little disk instead of a soupy mess.
You DO NEED a good grinder made for espresso to use this machine. The pump puts out a solid 9 bar, which means most grinders can't get the coffee fine enough. A burr grinder is the only way to go. This makes the grounds fine enough that a shot will take about 20 seconds to make. Any less time for a shot and it means your coffee is too coarse. If you don't want to buy a grinder right now, there are some good preground espresso coffees in a can (such as Illy), but it will go stale fast. You'll want the grinder.
If you want great espresso, and a reliable machine, you can't go wrong with the Silvia. Take a bit of time to learn proper technique and you'll be happy with this one.

Bugatti 15DIVACR110 Diva 15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine, Chrome Review

Bugatti 15DIVACR110 Diva 15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine, Chrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I purchased the red model of the Bugatti Diva about two months ago. After decades of burning out cheap espresso/cappuccino machines, I decided to get a more high-end model. What impressed me after pulling a few shots, was the inner power of this espresso maker--with 15 bar pressure, contrasted to the standard 8 or 9, extraction is quick and forceful, finishing with a beautiful light brown crema. It heats up quickly and is quieter during extraction than many other machines in my experience. Everything is solid and clearly designed for years of use. The milk steam frother has equal power to the extractor and sends plenty of heat and steam into the pitcher. The water tank in the back can be more easily filled with a reusable water bottle--avoiding the method of taking it out and carrying it to the water filter at the sink. Augmenting the previous reviewer I grind my beans (at a level just above Turkish coffee grind) and tamp the grind into the other style portafilter from the pod version he uses. I too have high praise for this very solid implement which has a tight and solid feel when connected to the machine, so the reader now has positive reviews of both portafilter versions. Finally, a word about grace and beauty. Aesthetically driven product design hasn't always been part of our lives in North America. The Bugatti Diva has a stark angularity and seems to slighly thrust forth at you with its wonderful large dial, but this assertiveness actually echoes well with my kitchen, and, I suspect, will do so with most other's kitchens. This will certainly be the only time in my life that I will own a Bugatti original. That being said, I give their Diva espresso and capuccino maker the highest possible praise, adding that I recommend the red version for its dramatic presentation of what is, after all, the most important appliance in any cultured and civilized kitchen.

ILLY FrancisFrancis! X-1 Trio Espresso Machine Review

ILLY FrancisFrancis! X-1 Trio Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I tried many espresso machines with varying results but this one was the best as far as I am concerned.

Firstly, it uses ILLY ESE pods available as Dark, Medium and Decaf. I usually go for dark but keep a few boxed of medium for guests. The espresso is beatiful with a lovely crema every time - just impossible to make a bad espresso.
Very easy to keep clean as the grinds are in a filtered pod.
Secondly, it looks awesome without being overbearingly garish or over-designed.

So happy - I bought a second one just in case!

Rancilio ROCKY Rancilio Burr Grinder with Doser Review

Rancilio ROCKY Rancilio Burr Grinder with Doser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I won't rate this product 5 stars because I don't believe it is a good value. At almost [...], this thing should be flawless, and its not. If my only criteria were grading the ground coffee it produces, it would be a 5 though. Let me say though that it does a fantastic job making espresso grounds.

The path I took before I purchased this grinder started with a Black Friday sale at Starbucks where I picked up a Sirena espresso machine for $315. I had been coveting this machine since I had been introduced to espresso a year earlier but couldn't stomach the [...] gut wrenching price for that machine. Box in hand, I headed home to make my first espresso.

Long story short, I spent a few days using my [...] blade grinder to grind the coffee and came to the conclusion that I couldn't get the grounds consistent, even or fine enough. So I spent some time reading the thread on c[...] about my machine and found that most people on there recommended the Rocky. I thought [...]for a coffee grinder was ridiculous (I typically use stronger language but....) so I shopped around and settled on the still expensive (seriously, we're grinding coffee here) but reasonable Breville BCG450XL Conical Burr Grinder. I liked the Breville as it was fast, quiet, clean, small and light. However, its finest setting ("Turkish") wasn't really all that fine. Even on the finest setting, I was pulling triple shots in 8-10 seconds (which is about 2 seconds longer than when not using any coffee!). At that rate the espresso is thin and there is no crema.

Not being the type to give up on anything, I did some more research on the coffee grinders out there and was disappointed to find there was nothing in the $100-200 price range that people had good things to say about. Thus the Rocky was my cheapest "sure thing". I bit the bullet and bought it. To my satisfaction, it arrived later that week.

From the first shot I knew I made the right choice; the coffee was thick and rich, with a frothy and yummy crema. It wasn't perfect, but damn, it was better than anything that had come out of the machine before that! It took a few more adjustments to the grind setting and tamping pressure to pull a 25-30 seconds shot, but I got there pretty quickly. The Rocky has the adjustability to grind so fine that it can completely choke the espresso machine. That's awesome! I've now got the grinder dialed in just perfectly for my beans. The shots pull consistently good with about 2-3mm of silky smooth crema every time.

Now for the bad...
1.) The doser - Inside the doser there is a 6 bladed sweeper that rotates when you pull the lever. However, the sweeper blades aren't quite long enough to reach the rim of the doser and thus don't sweep all of the grounds out. It leaves a substantial amount. I've learned to not use the doser lever anymore, but rather use a brush to sweep and move the doser blades around manually. That cleans it out very well.
(As a side note, I think that the doser is necessary to break up the clumps of ground coffee coming out of the machine.)
2.) The speed - 21 grams of coffee takes about 45 seconds to grind. The beans get stuck in the hopper too so I have to use my brush to sweep them! The Breville processed this much cofee in about 1/3 the time (granted it wasn't as fine, but still).
3.) The weight - At something like 17lbs, it's a beast. With as much coffee as the doser slops out, I need to move it frequently to clean the coffee grounds off the counter. On the flipside though, I am glad I got a lot of metal for my money though as I know this unit is sturdy enough to last a lifetime.
4.) Ergonomics - It's hard to get a grip on this thing to move it. I wish there were small handles on the side of it.
5.) Cleaning - Everything is screwed together and nothing snaps apart. It's sturdy, but it's a pain to clean because you have to get the screw gun out to disassemble it.

Overall I am happy with it as it makes delicious espresso. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about good espresso.

Jura-Capresso 13187 Impressa E8 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Black Review

Jura-Capresso 13187 Impressa E8 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I have to say, I *love* my E8! I tried one at a store and, after a lot of research, settled on Jura Capresso because of the cleaning cycle feature (most others you have to remove the "brew group" once a week or so and manually clean it - I was *so* not going to do that!). I settled on the E8 versus other JC's because of the price and the features... the higher-end models' extra features (none of which directly affect the quality of a single cup) were worth the additional cost, especially since I live alone.

I've no complaint about the temperature of the coffee, as long as I pre-heat my cup. A little hot water out of the spiget does the trick. I use a decent coffee bean from a local store and have excellent results. I did have to play around with the grind settings, but I expected that.

The frother (I don't have the fancy add-on) does a better-than-decent job of frothing/foaming milk; however, it's not as good as a coffee-house machine wielded by a pro, with perfect-temperature milk and a cold pitcher. However, it works much better than any home-based espresso machine I've encountered, and much better than what one often gets from a disaffected coffee counter person.

The flavor is rich and full - like cafe crema or espresso ought to be. While, again, a true barista with a true pro machine and the best beans can indeed produce a better cup, this is far better than what I typically get in a high-end coffee shop. That's part of what originally sold me on it - I found out the store that I sampled it at used "cheap supermarket beans" (as they put it).

One does have to be careful with the beans; if they're oily, they'll cling to each other and not make their way down the hopper. The solution? Stick your finger in the beans and swirl once, or don't use oily beans (oily doesn't necessarily mean more flavor). I like the beans I use but they do stick slightly, and a little touch with my finger fixes the 'problem'. The manual, video, web site, and talking chicken that came with the product makes this very clear.

Cleaning is a breeze - every couple of days I empty the hopper that catches the pucks (grounds). Once a week or so I rinse out the drip tray. Every once in a while it alerts me that I need to run a cleaning cycle: in goes the tablet and that's it.

My only complaint - and I knew this going in - is that for $1000 it ought not be 100% plastic. The spigot that the coffee comes out is plastic, and raises/lowers. I'm always careful, because if something that I have control over is going to break, it's going to be this piece. More expensive models have metal for this piece, but I couldn't see adding $500+ dollars for this.

I was originally concerned not having a cup warmer might be an issue. It says it has a passive cup warmer in some of the online literature, but that's baloney - the top doesn't get any warmer than rooom temperature. However, it is no inconvenience (and I'm pretty lazy) to release some water from the spigot into the cup, and let it sit for a few seconds.

This is just about the best thing ever! I used to go to coffee shops and drop $7 - $10 a day. I figure I'll make that back after costs in about a year. It's not expensive - it's economical in my book!

Pasquini Livia 90 Semi Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Pasquini Livia 90 Semi Automatic Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I bought the Livia 90 semi-automatic in 2003 and I was always pleased with the consistent results. Very good espresso with crema and excellent cappuccinos, not to mention the ability to brew a tea in less than 5 seconds. The machine is very sturdy and beautifully constructed with stainless steel and a 1.5 liter brass boiler chamber. The machine takes 7 minutes to warm up because it's all metal with only the porta-filter handle, the switches, and a couple of knobs made of plastic. For the first couple of years I used the machine with ground coffee, but then I switched to pods because it's less messy and I consistently get the crema every time I use the machine. Also this gave me the chance to try out several brands of coffee ( I believe I tried more than twenty varieties by buying pod samplers available on the web). I'm now mostly settled on Illy medium roast ESE pods, Starbucks, and Lucaffe Colombia pods.
After three years since I had the machine I had a problem with the steam water valve: at least once a day it wouldn't stop heating the machine after reaching the correct pressure, causing the safety valve to release the excess pressure with a very loud noise. I had to return the machine to Pasquini where they replaced the valve and rewired the machine to work properly. After that the machine always worked perfectly and I now turn on the machine early in the morning and I turn it off after dinner at night every day.
You need to take care of the maintenance of the machine, starting with cleaning the machine regularly ( I use the PuliCaff powder once a week) in order to get rid of the coffee oils that deposit in the group head and filters, as well as replacing the undercup gasket and the various O-rings at least once a year, or else the rubber will harden and water will leak from the porta-filter. The maintenance intervals vary with the machine usage: I brew about 6 to 8 coffees every day and I found out that cleaning the machine once a week and changing the gaskets once a year is a good compromise.
After seven years of use the machine still works great and looks like new. I love the espressos I can make with this machine, but now the problem is that I cannot drink regular brewed coffee anymore when I go out to a restaurant that doesn't serve espresso coffee.

Nespresso E350 Romeo Single-Serve Automatic Espresso Machine, Polished Aluminum Review

Nespresso E350 Romeo Single-Serve Automatic Espresso Machine, Polished Aluminum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I've had my E350 for just over 2 years. While I would recommend a Nespresso machine, I would not recommend this model. First of all, it is extremely loud when making espresso. When I make it in the kitchen, it can wake someone taking a nap on the porch. Or worse, it can be disruptive (and embarrassing) to guests in the dining room. Early on, I wrote to Nespresso (on their website) for assistance with this loud noise and they never wrote back to me. Next, the warming tray does not warm the glasses more than a few degrees (and only if you leave it on the tray for 30-60 minutes), making it not worth your while. You may think that it can easily make cappuccino and other specialty drinks... but with all the tubes and connections, it is a pain in the neck, more noise, messy, and not something you will ever want to do again once you try it. You should seriously think about a separate device to handle the milk and/or make specialty drinks. Regarding heat, I would strongly prefer that the espresso came out hotter. So instead, I will always rinse my cups with HOT WATER to make sure that it will be hot enough to serve. In a related note, it is a pain when making 4 to 8 of espressos in a row (for company) because by the time you are done making the last one, the first one may be cold already... and it just took 5 minutes away from your guests!

There is one good thing... the espresso tastes good. But again, you get the exact same taste from one of the other Nespresso units and thus I strong recommend another UNIT. Be warned, do not buy the E350.
