It makes great espresso, but since manufacturing was switched from Italy to China, the build quality of this espresso maker is not what it used to be. It does not fit together as well, and there are sharp edges in places. I've cut my hand on it twice. I am going to try one made by Stella, which is reportedly still manufactured in Italy.

We with my wife both love good coffee. We buy only gourmet brands and grind beans shortly before brew. Over years we went through several coffee makers. The coffee was never bad, but I was still craving for having at home machine reasonably priced and able to reproduce the best espresso Italian coffee. Started to google and found this one. I use this machine on daily basis, several months already and will never look back. The coffee is delicious and thanks to fact that machine is fully manual, I can make adjustments to what the final product will be. Frothing milk/cream works extremely well too. By adjusting waiting time for proper pressure/temperature amount to built up, the best results can be achieved easily. One warning only - this machine is for mature persons only. All warnings about not opening under pressure should be taken very seriously. Unscrew the main cover only when both valves are open and they show no presence of pressure inside.
P.S.1 - This machine is not getting clogged under proper operation. However, when not properly managed, coffee grounds can sneak through and clog dispensing valve. The blow back using bike pump will clear valve on first blow.
P.S.2 - The little improvement I am using: before filling up the coffee basket with ground coffee, I put a little (home made) cap on center tube. This makes filling the basket a real snap. Users having this machine already, will know very well what tube I am talking about.

When I purchased this, I wanted a high quality burr grinder to complement my Italian retro copper and brass espresso maker.

Pros: It is beautifully made and very heavy and solid. It has a nice glass coffee bean holder. There's a heavy duty brass Elektra logo plaque, which enhances its retro appearance. I assume the grind was set perfectly during testing before it was boxed and shipped because the grind is fabulous leaving our espresso with a beautiful la crema. I can't address the variability of the grind because we haven't felt the need to adjust it in the last 3 months. It arrived securely and wonderfully packaged.

Cons: I assumed the doser was detachable. Unfortunately it isn't, and I think its chrome color, black plastic lid, and contemporary style detract somewhat from the retro appearance. In addition, you must grind several doses of espresso to get the doser to be full enough to accurately dispense single doses into a portafilter (then, however, they are perfectly sized). Another odd thing is that the plate on the bottom of the unit is attached to the inner workings rather than the copper body, and mine sits slightly crooked as a result. At $800, it seems a little strange to have to put a quarter under the edge to have it stand up straight.

Ok, that said, I'm very happy with the espresso I get using this grinder, happy with the quality of the manufacturing and the appearance overall, and would buy it again.

This little pot is a work horse. It is very heavy, stainless steel--heavier than I expected--and well constructed. The parts fit together smoothly, and the base (water boiler) is wide enough to cover a moderate flame. The resulting espresso is delicious.

The only flaw in this beautiful pot is the spurting at the end of the brewing process. Quite a bit of coffee spurts out from under the lid in all directions and flows down onto the burner. I had my son drill a tiny hole in the lid, thinking that would relieve the pressure enough to stop the spurting, but it wasn't enough. So, instead of further modifying the pot, I solved the problem by placing a thin bread and butter knife across the top, under the lid during the brewing process. This vents the top enough to prevent the coffee from boiling over.

Other than the apparent flaw in the design of the lid--perhaps the coffee chamber should be a bit taller--this pot is wonderful! I hope I can find a larger one--12-14 cup size.

Previously there had been a two reviews posted here so tailored and smooth they could have only been created by marketing. A third review took umbrage at this tactic and proceeded to vent. None of this had anything to do with this machine and provided no information or incentive to empty out the trust fund and give it a go.

This machine has been in our house a week. I think it's wonderful: it's 7AM fool-proof. How to make a double espresso? A switch, three buttons and two minutes later I am slurping an excellent barista worthy double shot at a time of day I can't be trusted to put my pants on correctly. Four minutes and I have an espresso for the spouse and myself and I get huge bonus points for being so thoughtful.

Best? No daily clean up; it's all internal and needs to be attended to less than a bird feeder.

If you have the not insubstantial cash to drop, I really recommend it. 4 stars, easy.

my wife purchased this one for our family. initially, i looked at the darn thing and noted, "really, can this really make espresso, coffee, or what have you. I have drunk coffees from the far east(shanghai) to as far (west) roma, and never in my wildest dreams would i have imagined myself ever creating some of the best espresso ever." however, i did one rare morning, reading the instructions not once, twice, but a few times as i was boggled that alessi just needed low heat to brew the stuff of the gods.

first initial cup, "oh my, oh my" this is way to heavenly to be espresso. perfect temperature. perfect brew. and strong at that. okay, i was hooked like an ahi. you won't regret it purchasing this item. lastly, i think alessi would make a perfect gift, a gift that i would only consider giving to my wife. but alas, my wife beat me to the punch and i am totally indebted to her for a life time or two.

I love this grinder- it's stainless steel which makes it sturdy and easy to clean. The doser when set for espresso is a bit slow but has a very full range for espresso-french press. It's perfect size for my counter top. The doser makes it 0 waste!

I don't even drink coffee, but I got a similar-looking one for my wife a couple of years ago - looks the same except it doesn't have the black stripes around it. It's high-priced and I don't know why - but it's stainless steel, not aluminum, takes a high polish, nice looking. But the main thing is, my wife loves it - she has espresso twice a day, and for awhile she kept trying to use her Saeco machine, but it always needed expensive repairs and was kind of a hassle to use. For the last few months she's been using just this little pot, twice daily, it's fast and simple and works perfectly. There's no big production number required to get espresso into her system (that's good for me, too!). She can do without the crema, and she finds it makes as good or better espresso than she can buy anywhere. I could have gotten her a cheaper one that works just as well, probably, but this was a special gift so I didn't mind the extra cost. She loved that it's in MoMA. It's that kind of thing that makes a gift out of the ordinary.

9090/6 FM Size: 6 Cup Richard Sapper is a German industrial designer. He received a Compasso d'Oro industrial design award in 1959. Sapper partnered with Italian designer Marco Zanuso and were hired in 1959 as consultants to Brionvega, an Italian company trying to produce stylish electronics that would compete with products manufactured in Japan and Germany. They designed a series of radios and televisions that became enduring icons of an aesthetic known as techno-functionalism. One of their more notable designs was the rounded, compact and portable Doney 14 (1962), the first television to feature completely transistorized construction. Using the aesthetic of sculptural minimalism, the pair designed the compact folding Grillo telephone for Siemens and Italtel in 1965. The Grillo was one of the first telephones to put the dial and the earpiece on the same unit, and today is a featured display at New York's Museum of Modern Art. The 9090 was not only the first espresso coffee machine in our history, but it was also the first Alessi object designed for the kitchen after the 30s. It also gained us our first Compasso d'Oro Award (in 1979) and it is on display in the Permanent Design Collection at the MOMA in New York. The Espresso Coffee Maker was the first of our amphibious objects, those that can be used in the kitchen but are attractive enough to be used directly at the table. So far we are enjoying this product although now that we have it there are a few things we would buy different next time. We would buy a machine that could be hooked up to a water supply as the reservoir is a bit on the small side, and we would actually try some out at a sales center as the water pump is a bit noisy. Having said that, we are still happy with it, and it makes a pretty consistent espresso. We figure we have saved 175.00 our first month by not going to Starbucks.

Actually I have this machine. I wrote this below review for older model.


I got this machine from ebay because for lower price was available there.

So I have used it already for one month. The espresso is coming out a fabulous, I think better, then Starbucks, even I have used Starbucks beans. I have tried three types of beans (Lavazza, Starbucks, Costco Hawaiian (yellow package) brand), so the best taste and creamy was from Costco Hawaiian brand. Lavazza in other hand was creamy but is not strong enough.

The cleaning is easy and fast. The frothing pitcher is produced good milk for cappuccino. I don't have any problems with this machine.

I have also noticed that me and my family is started consuming more coffee. I last time I have bought Starbucks coffee was just a day before I got this fabulous machine.

Also I will to suggest a follow the user manual and if you don't now something called to CS Saeco[...]

Because remembering, its European product, so it's like a German car- amazing to drive but easy to break, if you're not followed to user manual.

I gave four stars is only because the trash container need to be emptied too often, even the last one was not full and water container I wish will be bigger.

Where to begin? This machine can do it all, from a strong shot of espresso to a flawless cappuccino, all in under minute. If you can tie your shoes, you can use one of these machines.

I looked in to this machine after using an older Capresso model at a friend's house. I was always impressed by how easily and quickly he could make a variety of drinks for guests, not to mention the quality of their appearance and flavor.

This machine comes with two different frothing systems, one is a more traditional bullet style frother, while the other can automatically steam or froth milk. This is where the J5 really shines. In no time you can froth yourself milk that would make the most seasoned barista jealous, and then push a single button to instantly brew piping hot coffee.

The machine starts with whole beans of your choosing and grinds them just for the drink you are making. This ensures that you'll get the freshest tasting coffee cup after cup.

What I like most about this machine though is the variety of drinks it can make. If you have a guest over who isn't a big coffee drinker you can use the machine to make instant hot water for tea, or my favorite trick: run chocolate milk through the steamer for instant hot chocolate. Of course for the rest of us, the pressure brewing system in this machine will allow you to say goodbye to expensive coffee drinks, and become your own favorite barista.

We have owned several home espresso machines and this is by far the best one ever. The ability to froth milk automatically just before or just after making coffee or espresso is unique. In most other units it's necessary to purge the water system before steaming milk and then purging it again to regain brewing temperature. In this unit you just press the button and frothed milk foams out into your cup, and is pre-programmed to stop at the right moment. The milk unit can be removed and stored in a refrigerator and the parts are easy to clean. It even tells you when to run a cleaning or decalcifying session. Programable in English and several European languages. It's also easy to make hot cocoa by frothing chocolate milk. Electronic controls dose out the amount of coffee or espresso from a short shot of espresso (single or doppio) to a mug of coffee. It turns itself on and off and pre-measures the coffee you grind and the strength of your coffee. This is an electronic wizard that does lots more than brew a great cup of coffee. This is an ideal machine for an office or a household with a big entertainment kitchen.
