Pasquini Livietta T2 Espresso Machine Review

My Saeco Vienna Superautomatica just bit the big one a few weeks ago, so I got to upgrade to this bad boy, and Oh, my, goodness! Best espresso of my life!!! Takes a bit of practice, but here's the way to get the best out of your machine:
1. Preheat your machine for 2-5 minutes. Place a couple of demitasse cups on top of the machine to heat them up and make sure you have either filtered or bottled (calcium free) water in your water tank.
2. Send a spurt of hot water through your empty brew group and filter basket to heat it up before loading it up with your grinds.
3. The grind is absolutely imperative!!! You must have the right grind to get the most out of your shot. If you don't have the right grind you'll have a crappy shot and it will be bitter and nasty. I currently have mine set at between 2.5 and 3 and it's perfect. I'm using: Pasquini Lux Coffee Grinder. You need to tamp the grounds into the filter basket with your tamper with firm, even pressure. When you put your brew group onto the machine, don't crank it on too tight, just put it on and pull the handle forward.
4. If your machine is warm (green "coffee" light is on) push the coffee light (make sure you have a warmed cup under the brew group :) and brew your ambrosia of the gods. You should see a chestnut and tan stripey later of crema on top, and your espresso should be smooth, not at all bitter.

If it's too dark and bitter, and there is no crema, your grind is probably too fine. Try making the grind a little less fine (usually you will need to adjust the grind with the machine running, you may need to check your instruction manual depending on what type you have).

I hope this helps! I'm very much enjoying a latte right now and it is VERY smooth. The microfoam is like velvet. No sugar required :) I'm going to be high on caffeine today, woohoo.

EDIT: Just as an FYI, I got some snotty Italian coffee a few days after the coffee machine arrived (it came with the machine as a freebie, but it arrived late). It tasted like it had been roasted in someone's sweaty boot and left to rot for several months. It was truly awful. There was no amount of sugar or chocolate that could cover the flavor of the bitter nastiness. Really, really gross. I highly recommend sticking with freshly roasted coffee from someplace that you really like. My favorite place to get coffee is [...] (their Sally's special blend is amazing!!!), another favorite place is [...]. Both are excellent for very freshly roasted coffees and split bean has the most unbelievable alfajores I have EVER tasted. Just... Wow!!!

Now that I have good coffee back in the grinder, I'm back to very much enjoying my at least twice daily coffee :) Once the grind is just right, and the art of the pull is mastered, you cannot go wrong. This machine makes AMAZING coffee!!!

Pasquini Livia 90 Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Recently my La Pavoni broke down after 3 years, so I had to look for another machine. My machine of choice for espresso has always been Cimballi, but I was not impressed with any of their machines, which did not require a water line. After some searching and recommendation from a friend I happened upon the Pasquini Livia 90.

As far as espresso machines go, the Pasquini Livia 90 is the best unit that does not require a water line. The water resevoir holds a very large amount of water and the espresso made with this machine is simply amazing.

A good espresso should have a thick layer of creme on top (goldish brown in color) which will hold the sugar poured in to the coffee afloat for a few seconds. The Pasquini Livia 90 was the first machine I've owned to accomplish the feat. I've owned a $700 Krups Fully Automated Machine, used a $3,000 Fully Automated Machine and owned the La Pavoni fully manual machine. However, the Pasquini was the only machine to provide the perfect creme.

The steam produced by the machine will froth milk for any of the popular espresso drinks and the ability to draw hot water from the unit is also a nice touch. Unlike some machines you can leave the unit on for long periods of time without having to worry about burning out the machine.

Best machine in its class.

Pasquini Livia 90 Semi Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Pasquini Livia 90 Semi Automatic Espresso Machine

I bought the Livia 90 semi-automatic in 2003 and I was always pleased with the consistent results. Very good espresso with crema and excellent cappuccinos, not to mention the ability to brew a tea in less than 5 seconds. The machine is very sturdy and beautifully constructed with stainless steel and a 1.5 liter brass boiler chamber. The machine takes 7 minutes to warm up because it's all metal with only the porta-filter handle, the switches, and a couple of knobs made of plastic. For the first couple of years I used the machine with ground coffee, but then I switched to pods because it's less messy and I consistently get the crema every time I use the machine. Also this gave me the chance to try out several brands of coffee ( I believe I tried more than twenty varieties by buying pod samplers available on the web). I'm now mostly settled on Illy medium roast ESE pods, Starbucks, and Lucaffe Colombia pods.
After three years since I had the machine I had a problem with the steam water valve: at least once a day it wouldn't stop heating the machine after reaching the correct pressure, causing the safety valve to release the excess pressure with a very loud noise. I had to return the machine to Pasquini where they replaced the valve and rewired the machine to work properly. After that the machine always worked perfectly and I now turn on the machine early in the morning and I turn it off after dinner at night every day.
You need to take care of the maintenance of the machine, starting with cleaning the machine regularly ( I use the PuliCaff powder once a week) in order to get rid of the coffee oils that deposit in the group head and filters, as well as replacing the undercup gasket and the various O-rings at least once a year, or else the rubber will harden and water will leak from the porta-filter. The maintenance intervals vary with the machine usage: I brew about 6 to 8 coffees every day and I found out that cleaning the machine once a week and changing the gaskets once a year is a good compromise.
After seven years of use the machine still works great and looks like new. I love the espressos I can make with this machine, but now the problem is that I cannot drink regular brewed coffee anymore when I go out to a restaurant that doesn't serve espresso coffee.

Pasquini Livia 90 Semiautomatic Commercial Espresso/Cappuccino Machine Review

Pasquini Livia 90 Semiautomatic Commercial Espresso/Cappuccino Machine

(More customer reviews)

I have just received the machine from Illy USA at a very attractive price (considering I order the Illy beans regularly anyway, their price on this machine with a one-year coffee subscription is a excellent indeed). I have been needing to replace an espresso machine every 2 years ca., I figured, I might as well try out one considered to be in the light duty commercial catagory.

After the first few cups I learned the proper pressure on the temper and out came from the machine coffee that any Italian coffee bar would be proud of. It could be my imagination, but, the brew from this mahcine seems to be stronger (more bitter) then the Saeco, Krup, and Solis ($300 range machines). Although the crema is not as much when compared with the others I used before. Also, being able to leave the machine on all day long means instant hot water/steam which is very nice for a small office environment. I used the hot water mainly to heat the cups. It does however, take about 7 minutes to reach its operating condition (to bring a mass of water to the proper temperature and pressure in the internal boiler) when first turned on every morning and the noise from the pump that transfers water from the holding tank to the boiler is quite loud.

There are some minor flaws that I could see so far. The fit and finish on the machine is fine but not perfect. There are corners on the rear that could be finished a little better and some spot welding marks should be polished out. The water tray (the one below the group head to hold liquid that drips off after a brew) is very small and needs to be emptied quite often.

This is a new machine; thus, I cannot report its long term performance and endurance. My past experience with the $300 range machine is that they last about 2 to 3 years before something expensive to fix breaks. I shall see if this seemingly robust machine will last.

So far, I am very satisfied with it.

Product Description

From Italy comes the celebrated Pasquini Livia 90 Semiautomatic espresso & cappuccino machine.  Designed for home, office, or small restaurant use, it employs sturdy commercial components from a world famous professional espresso machine line.  The Pasquini Livia 90 Semiautomatic espresso machine sets the standard for what is possible from a home espresso machine.  This is the true connoisseur's espresso machine, and is a lifetime investment for the espresso aficionado. Jam packed with commercial grade features and parts, the Pasquini Livia is a true heat exchanger espresso machine, which means the boiler is used for steaming on demand, and espresso water is drawn straight from the built in reservoir - it gets flash heated as it passes through a piping system inside the boiler.  With the Livia 90, producing espresso shot after espresso shot, and steaming instantly for large parties is never a problem. Brewing espresso & frothing milk at the same time is no problem for the Livia!  This is an absolute necessity for any espresso machine used for entertaining or in a semi-commercial environment.  This saves a lot of time and eliminates the need for you to wait for the boiler to ""recover"" between espresso brewing and milk heating functions (common on all single boiler machines).  The dual heat exchanger allows for both functions to take place simultaneously. The Livia 90 Semiautomatic is just like the Livia 90 Automatic, but IT DOES NOT have the automatic one-touch brewing system like the automatic version.
