Saeco S-PR-SG Primea Ring Super-Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Saeco S-PR-SG Primea Ring Super-Automatic Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Yes, this machine is very expensive. I was lucky enough to get it at a very very good price when amazon temporarily reduced the price, otherwise no way I would spend so much on something like this....

Anyway, this thing is quite simply awesome. My wife and I are now addicted to coffee :-) Latte machiatos and cappuccinos in the morning, espresso in the evening, hot milk for our daughter too!

The machine is totally automated, it will tell you when to clean it, when to add stuff, it will keep your cups warm, and did I mention it makes wonderful coffee? You can personalize how you want each of the different coffee drinks to come out, stronger, hotter, more robust. You can double the quantity of coffee coming out. It will accommodate various cup sizes, from espresso cups to large coffee cups. Did I mention it makes wonderful espresso/coffee :-)

Now the negatives: the machine is rather large so make sure you have the space for it, figure about a 1'X1' footprint of counter space, but it looks very modern and high tech. You do have to keep it clean, certain things have to be done about 15 minutes after your first cup (if you use the cappuccitore to make milk based drinks) but that is understandable as you want to make sure the milk doesn't start clogging everything. The water reservoir is not very large (you can get about 6 cups of coffee out of it) considering the size of the machine. You do have to learn to navigate the touch sensitive ring to get to what you want, I can imagine some people finding it frustrating. The machine does seem to have a lot of moving internal parts, when you use it you hear all kinds of mechanical noises in there, it makes you wonder how long that internal mostly plastic apparatus, called the Brew Group, will last; it's the heart of the machine. I am now drinking more coffee than ever!!!

All in all this thing is awesome, I hope it lasts a long time!

Product Description

What sets the Primea Ring apart from most household super automatics is the machine's ability to do more than just make espresso. Featuring 2 front spouts that can both dispense coffee and milk, the Primea Ring can froth and brew into 2 cups at the same time, giving you the possibility of making 2 drinks simultaneously--even lattes or cappuccinos. The Primea Ring's click-wheel dial lets you scroll through 8 drink choices, so you can choose from hot milk, hot water, espresso, coffee, long coffee, espresso macchiato, cappuccino or latte macchiato. Featuring a sleek, simple control dial and the ability to make 2 cappuccinos or lattes simultaneously, the Primea Ring is one of the most capable home espresso machines on the market. Featuring today's popular technological styling, the Primea Ring features a click-wheel control interface to make navigating through the different features as simple as using an iPod. Simply use your finger to scroll through the machine's menu options. As you scroll, the Primea's controls are displayed on the digital display above the dial, and you can enter any setting just by pressing the coffee cup in the center of the dial. The Primea is designed to create your choice of 8 different drinks, from traditional espressos, to cappuccinos and lattes. Grinding, tamping, brewing and frothing are fully automatic, and the Primea Ring has a built-in milk container so there's no rubber hose traveling across your counter. For increased durability and efficiency, the Primea is equipped with a stainless steel boiler and Saeco's Rapid Steam system, so the machine can brew espresso, and froth or steam without wait time in between. With a range of other premium features, like a motorized, removable drip tray and an actively heated cup warmer, the Primea Ring delivers great-tasting results with unmatched convenience and style.

Jura-Capresso 13187 Impressa E8 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Black Review

Jura-Capresso 13187 Impressa E8 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I have to say, I *love* my E8! I tried one at a store and, after a lot of research, settled on Jura Capresso because of the cleaning cycle feature (most others you have to remove the "brew group" once a week or so and manually clean it - I was *so* not going to do that!). I settled on the E8 versus other JC's because of the price and the features... the higher-end models' extra features (none of which directly affect the quality of a single cup) were worth the additional cost, especially since I live alone.

I've no complaint about the temperature of the coffee, as long as I pre-heat my cup. A little hot water out of the spiget does the trick. I use a decent coffee bean from a local store and have excellent results. I did have to play around with the grind settings, but I expected that.

The frother (I don't have the fancy add-on) does a better-than-decent job of frothing/foaming milk; however, it's not as good as a coffee-house machine wielded by a pro, with perfect-temperature milk and a cold pitcher. However, it works much better than any home-based espresso machine I've encountered, and much better than what one often gets from a disaffected coffee counter person.

The flavor is rich and full - like cafe crema or espresso ought to be. While, again, a true barista with a true pro machine and the best beans can indeed produce a better cup, this is far better than what I typically get in a high-end coffee shop. That's part of what originally sold me on it - I found out the store that I sampled it at used "cheap supermarket beans" (as they put it).

One does have to be careful with the beans; if they're oily, they'll cling to each other and not make their way down the hopper. The solution? Stick your finger in the beans and swirl once, or don't use oily beans (oily doesn't necessarily mean more flavor). I like the beans I use but they do stick slightly, and a little touch with my finger fixes the 'problem'. The manual, video, web site, and talking chicken that came with the product makes this very clear.

Cleaning is a breeze - every couple of days I empty the hopper that catches the pucks (grounds). Once a week or so I rinse out the drip tray. Every once in a while it alerts me that I need to run a cleaning cycle: in goes the tablet and that's it.

My only complaint - and I knew this going in - is that for $1000 it ought not be 100% plastic. The spigot that the coffee comes out is plastic, and raises/lowers. I'm always careful, because if something that I have control over is going to break, it's going to be this piece. More expensive models have metal for this piece, but I couldn't see adding $500+ dollars for this.

I was originally concerned not having a cup warmer might be an issue. It says it has a passive cup warmer in some of the online literature, but that's baloney - the top doesn't get any warmer than rooom temperature. However, it is no inconvenience (and I'm pretty lazy) to release some water from the spigot into the cup, and let it sit for a few seconds.

This is just about the best thing ever! I used to go to coffee shops and drop $7 - $10 a day. I figure I'll make that back after costs in about a year. It's not expensive - it's economical in my book!

Krups XP9000 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine and Coffee Center, Charcoal Review

Krups XP9000 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine and Coffee Center, Charcoal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

After my last super auto, a Saeco, failed for the umpteenth time I purchased the XP9000 in July of 09. Over time it has become accepted but...

For a machine the size of this one larger reservoirs, water, bean, and drip tray / puck bin might have been considered. The Saeco spoiled us with its onboard water connection. Both the Saeco and the Juro which preceded it had larger bean hoppers and while I do not know for sure, I think they both had larger drip trays as well. Either way it seems that we spend a fair amount of time dinking around with some machine demand for dumping or filling in order to get a cup. A related misery is that it is not smart enough to know ahead of time that it is out out whatever it about to notify you that it is out of. So, you request say a cappucino and it froths the milk and then the grinder starts but there are not enough beans to complete the cycle. Grinder goes through it's cycle empty, the "Fill beans" message pops up, and since there are no ground beans to process the machine goes into it's dump cycle and you are left with a cup of froth and another 30 seconds of your life unrecoverable. Both of our previous machines were able to deliver product and then alert us that we had a chore to perform, or let us know that we had a chore and not make a halfhearted attempt to deliver a product that they were unable to.

The grinder has its own shortcomings. It has 4 settings which limits experimentation. That's not a showstopper and I knew that going in. On the other hand cleaning a burr grinder should not require any significant level of machine disassembly, not the case for the Krups. That's one concession to minimalist design the I wouldn't have made and didn't anticipate. Yes, removing the little tophat improves bean flow, yes, using non-oily beans helps keep the burrs from gumming up, but as with any machine sooner or later it requires maintenance. That maintenance should be able to be performed by people who do not as a rule keep hex key wrenches in their kitchen drawers.

The flip side is that this is a great little machine. It has grunted out over 3000 coffee products in the last year and we are quite happy with the beast. The queen hates techno for techno sake but she is comfortable using the Krup for both her regular caffiene fix and frothing fancies. I can tailor espressos adequately to reflect what I'm trying to accomplish with homeroasts. This thing does not replace our manual machines or stand alone grinders but (with the exception of "fill beans", "empty drip tray", and "fill water" messages) it spits forth whatever we request pretty much at the push of a button. Color and taste are adjustable, layering of milk drinks is adequate, temp of product is better than other super autos we have had, owners manual is readable if not very informative (it's nice that the manual is stored onboard although an easily serviced grinder would have been nicer), unit is minimalist and the exterior cleans up easily. Frothing is easy albeit kind of a Rube Goldberg affair. It is quite comparable to my best efforts at manually frothing except there is no opportunity for adding smiley faces and swirly patterns in the froth. I am not bothered that I am not spending 4 or 5 bucks a shot at Starjunks for that artistic bonus. Oh yeah, frothing cleanup. Keep a small glass of water nearby when frothing and leave the frother tip submerged when between shots. The frother will give you years (well, year anyway) of service at as good a quality as the day it came from the factory... or whine about it not frothing, whatever floats your boat. I have yet to deal with Krups for anything so have no opinion about customer service.

I got mine for real short money, less than 400 US, from a closeout website and I see now that it is discontinued here and elsewhere. Pity. A sub 1000 super auto is rare and one less than half that is a unicorn.

Last bit. These super autos have had a 5 year lifetime in our house give or take. To sum up, machinewise my last 3300 cups cost 11 cents a shot. This time next year that cost could shrink by half. If this thing makes it 2 years for what it cost, I'm a happy guy.

DeLonghi ESAM5500M Perfecta Digital Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Metallic Blue Review

DeLonghi ESAM5500M Perfecta Digital Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Metallic Blue
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I am surprised that I am the first reviewer of this great machine. I just received mine yesterday. I bought it from another vender, but since I typically do most of my shopping via Amazon I thought I would share my experience thus far. Overall, this Super-Automatic is simple to use and makes great coffee, lattes, and cappuccino's. My advice though....WATCH THE DVD BEFORE USING!!! I thought I had this thing in the bag.. how difficult could it be to use??....Well it isn't difficult to use, but there are a few things I did that had I watched the video all the way through I would not have done. For example, when setting how fine or coarse you want the beans you have to adjust the dial one notch at a time while the grinder is running (still doesn't make sense to me). I paused the video before waiting for the lady to finish talking on the topic and just moved it a few notches towards fine...oops! Oh well, doesn't seem to have adversely effected anything, but now I know. Contrary to reviews I have read of super-auto's, the burr grinder on this one is quiet when running. On a scale of 1-10 where 10 is extremely loud and 1 is basically silent I would rate this machine a 5 and my Cuisinart Grind and brew (the one that hold like a pound of beans) an 8. I was actually expecting something much louder.

Build Quality- I would have to say I am impressed with the looks of this machine and its fit and finish. I am sure some people will complain of the amount of plastic, but seeing how this thing already weighs over 20lbs. why add more weight. I thought about the Gran Dama, but honestly this machine is better.

Coffee- I was also considering the Jura Z5 because I read good things, but the price was a stretch. Granted, this machine isn't cheap either. I believe that I made the right choice. The espresso is great. I do wonder though what it tasted like from the factory, but since I changed the settings prematurely I will never know...ha! The Milk pitcher is ingenious...BRAVO! Latte's and Cappuccino's are a breeze and let me tell you this machine makes both very well. Sure a semi-auto can do better, but really I do not want to do the extra steps. As it is, Starbucks does not compare. I have read reviews that state the Gran Dama latte's can be cold. I have to admit, the first one I made was, but after I made a couple and utilized the cup warmer they were perfect. I bought the Cinnamon Dolce syrup from Starbucks and I downed to many lattes....probably explains why at 0209 EST I am still up and writing this review.

My Opinion- If you are in the market for a super-automatic I would say give this one a consideration. I bought this machine from a place that has probably the best return policy of all retailers, so if something does go wrong I will take it right back for another. Regardless, the people at Delonghi are great and I was amazed that as soon as I pushed (1) I was talking to a person almost immediately. I will probably just purchase the extended warranty from the manufacturer and extend the 2 years to 4...Extra $150. That is all for now. Look for an update in a couple months.

**UPDATE** 3/24/10

Well I overworked the first one, but the place I bought it from gladly took it back and ordered me another one. I made nearly 2,000 cups of coffee in 4 months with the first one. I have made nearly 1000 with the one I have now, but it seems to be holding up fine. As far as recommending it I still would. I love this machine. It is so nice that I can make everything Starbucks does without having to pay them $4 for every cup. I have basically every syrup they have and all my guests rave about the Delonghi. It is a lot of money to spend on a coffee maker, but I would do it again.

Saeco 4038 Vienna Plus 15-Bar-Pump Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Graphite Review

Saeco 4038 Vienna Plus 15-Bar-Pump Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Graphite
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I recently purchased a Vienna Superautomatica as an inexpensive second espresso maker. The first thing I noticed is that it is Italian made like many of the great espresso machines. The body of the Vienna is "graphite" plastic, and while it does not feel first class, it somehow has a pretty sturdy feel to it. I also like that the footprint is pretty small thus taking up little counter space.

I opened the manual, which is not particularly clear, but need not be on account of very simple operation. The Vienna has three buttons--on/off, coffee, and steam. It also has a steamer control knob and a water volume knob.

I turned on the machine after filling the coffee and water tanks. The buttons feel Italian--you'll know what I mean if you've owned an Alfa Romeo. They are a bit clunky next to my old Capresso C1000, but they work well (for now).

The Vienna takes a couple of minutes to warm up--I don't mind this for reasons I'll reveal in a minute. The coffee spout is adjustable up and down to accommodate a large variety of cups and mugs. Once it's ready, the coffee light stops blinking. I push the button and it begins to grind the coffee. The noise level of the machine is louder than my Capresso, but not too bad. You might wake up the house with it in the morning, but my child stayed asleep. Once the coffee finishes the grind, the Vienna immediately begins making espresso.

My first impression was that I saw a lot more steam coming from the coffee than my Capresso. I am hopeful. The coffee also looked a bit thicker than the Capresso. After the Vienna finished I observed the cup: nice crema, plenty hot, and smells like the genuine article. I gave it a taste--wow, step aside Capresso, this espresso is richer, hotter, and a lot closer to coffee bar espresso. Next I took a sip. Ah yes, the cup holds rich chocolatey espresso. If you are sort of a coffee snob, you'll like what you taste. The coffee is much richer than the Capresso, which I attribute to hotter water and fuller extraction.

I'm sure that the Vienna will not make good enough espresso for some folks, but to me, it still tastes better than Starbucks. It was more than $100 cheaper than my Capresso and frankly makes better espresso. I cannot yet speak to the durability of the machine, but the Vienna is now my favorite inexpensive espresso maker.

DeLonghi ESAM3500.N Magnifica Digital Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine Review

DeLonghi ESAM3500.N Magnifica Digital Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I received this machine as a gift (thankfully, 'cuz I wouldn't have been able to afford it for myself). Before this I had a Capresso CoffeeTEC machine. The Magnifica is so easy to use and to clean, it's great not to have to deal with filters, grinders, frothers, etc. My husband is a stickler for using freshly ground coffee beans for his coffee. It's such a joy not to have to sweep up the coffee grinds from the floor now! Anyway, here are some things I like about it:

- Amazing tasting coffee; freshly ground at the touch of a button. Several people have told me that it tastes better than Starbucks coffee
- Machine rinses itself after turn on and before turn off
- Tells you when to clean the coffee grind container (makes 'em into little hockey pucks)
- Wide range of coffee strengths from which to choose: extra mild, mild, regular, strong, extra-strong
- 3 cup sizes from which to choose. You can change the settings so the cup sizes are customized for you. I use the "Long" setting. If you press it twice quickly, it will make 2 'long' coffees for you
- Love the frothing pitcher. Just attach it, press the cappuccino button, sit back and watch it make you a steaming hot cappuccino with thick froth. Frother puts frothed milk directly into your cup and then makes the espresso and puts it in the cup.
- There's a pre-ground "bypass" button. I use it when I want to have decaf. I add ground decaf beans and use the frother to add frothed milk.
- Machine tells you everything that it "needs." "Fill Beans container, descale, add water...etc."
- You can use the water spout for instantaneous hot water for tea, hot chocolate, etc.
- Starbucks will sell you bottles of their flavored syrups, so I bought several of my favorite flavors for my little "at home cafe"

Update Sep 2008: About a month ago I opened the front door of the machine and it was empty. I thought to myself "who would've broken into my house and only stolen the infuser to the coffee machine?" I examined the machine and was able to see that the infuser was stuck in the housing at the top of the machine. An internet search showed that other people had had the same problem but no solutions were posted. I called DeLonghi and went through a few troubleshooting steps with a friendly customer service lady. Finally we gave up and she said I had to send it in to get it fixed. They sent me the boxes, labels and packing materials, which was nice. I sent it to an appliance place in NY. After 3 weeks I called to check the status and they said, "It's on the shelf; we'll get to it." Within a day or two the machine was delivered and working again. It was a bummer to have to ship it out to get it fixed (took a month) and my other gripe is that it came back dirtier than when I sent it (coffee grounds everywhere, etc.). Would've been nice if they wiped it down. Anyway, DeLonghi customer service handled it well.

DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine Review

DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I have the EAM3200, which is the previous model version. The differences are slight but noticeable to the newer. These machines are the best in class for price and performance, produce a great espresso, and are maintainable in ways that other manufacturers models are not. The coffee from the Delonghi is just as good as from Jura and even some manual models such as Expobar and Rancillo. It is very close to what you find in Italy - not quite, but for the price it is worth it. Great crema, hot temperature, rich flavor. And the best part is you can pull out the brew mechanism and clean it - VERY key. This will ensure sound operation and function for many years.

In order to keep this machine is fine working order, you need to do a bit of upkeep each week and use the right beans.

1. Only use non-oily, 100% Arabica beans. If you use oily beans it will clog frequently and attract rancid flavors. It will also shorten the life of the machine. I use Illy, but any espresso will do (I actually get the Illy dark roast - it has more flavor when brewing a larger "americano" cup).
2. Clean the brew mechanism once a week. Just snap it out and run it under hot water.
3. Use spring water instead of tap water. This will keep any weird flavors from your tap entering the coffee. It may build up minerals, but...
4. De-calcify the machine when it asks for it - don't wait.

I, for one, would rather have manual controls over coffee amount, strength, etc. You are not losing out on anything by not having digital controls - other than not being able to have the machine automatically on and ready to go when you first wake up. As for the other models ability to do milk-based drinks at the touch of a button - how often do you really want a cappuccino? If it is every day, then get the 3500. If you are like me and need real coffee in the morning, then get this model. The milk canister can only sit in the fridge for so long. If you are planning to serve cappuccino at dinner parties, then you are committing Italian heresy - cappuccino is only served in the morning.

CONS
1. The cup warmer does not work very well, but get double walled cups and the temperature of the product will not be an issue.
2. You can't have it turn on automatically at a certain time. But it only takes a few minutes to get up to temperature.
3. It is NOISY.
