Rancilio Silvia Home And Office Espresso And Capuccino Machine Review

Rancilio Silvia Home And Office Espresso And Capuccino Machine

I owned a Francis Francis X1 for about 3 years. It broke, so I was not happy about paying so much for just 3 years of service. Doing the research, I determined that the Silvia had a good reputation, and it seemed that it was more durable. So far (and I hope I will be able to change my opinion as time goes on) I'm not overjoyed with the machine. My main complaint is with the ability to make a nice rich crema. I'm not inexperienced, so I think I've got a pretty good idea of what I'm doing. I use a Rancillo Rocky grinder, and have tried a number of different settings from very fine to much less so. I find that 1) the portafilter does not hold as much grounds as I would like, and, 2) that even being very careful to not pack the grounds too hard in the portafilter, the Silvia does not have sufficient pressure to pump the water through the grounds. I understand that my Francis Francis was an 18 bar pump, and the Silvia is a 15 bar. That seems to make a huge difference in the ability to get a nice thick crema without taking all day to wait for it to dribble out. I believe there is a way to go into the Silvia and alter the pump pressure, and I'm going to look into that. I'm not crazy about doing that however, and don't know if it will have warranty or durability implications.
On the upside, is the steaming capability. That sucker puts our serious steam. As I said, I've got a few years of making lattes, and I burned myself a couple of times while getting used to the powerful blast that comes out of this baby's steam wand. That I like.
Overall, I think I will get to like this machine, but I can't help but wish that the portafilter would hold more grounds and that the pump had about five more bars of pressure.

Coffee-tech/brioso Home Coffee Roaster (Motorized Version) Review

Coffee-tech/brioso Home Coffee Roaster (Motorized Version)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I received this item yesterday, unpacked it, read the two pages of technical specs and one page of instructions, and was immediately aware that this was not originally built for the American market. The manual starts with what appears to be Hebrew script on the first line of the specifications and refers to the 220 volt plug on the page of instructions, both pretty good clues. On inspection, the assortment of add-on parts includes a loose adapter to convert the type C (two round prongs) plug at the end of the motor wiring to a two-blade American plug. This feeds power to the built-in line transformer and then to the 12 volt motor. The adapter did not snugly fit the plug and did not power the motor until I pulled it halfway out to a contact point that had more friction and then taped the connectors together. Once the power flowed, the machine ran successfully throughout my dry run and all during the first hot roasting effort. There is no on/off switch on the motor and it has to be unplugged to stop the machine. The electrical wiring runs close to the rotating cylinder handle and looks to be a potential friction wear point. That section of the electrical wire is covered with a loose fitting insulator that seems designed to ward off contact and also give a little protection from the nearby flame. The roaster body is a copper cylinder with an effectively insulated handle on the motor-side and a similar but removable handle on the distal end. That handle is friction joined to the copper cylinder and the fit seems effective to make a secure closure and still allow you to open it at will by lifting the cylinder off the frame with the handles. The beans are loaded and unloaded through that same hole. The frame is an adequate gauge of aluminum, shaped by a press break to provide a cradle for the cylinder axles. The bottom of the frame is pierced with a hole adequate to allow the side burner on my outdoor gas grill to heat the cylinder and to securely support the machine. It seems likely to work with an indoor stove top, too. The motor-side handle includes a spur gear which meshes with the spur gear on the motor which is attached to the aluminum frame. With a little practice, the copper cylinder can be raised or lowered while the motor is running. While raised, the distal handle can be unplugged from the cylinder and the progress of the roast checked periodically. There is no provision for filtering or removing chaff, you need to work that out yourself after you remove the roasted beans from the cylinder. There is no provision for cooling the beans so you should have a heatproof sieve or some other solution worked out ahead of time to keep the beans from continuing to cook after you remove the cylinder from the heat. I am a home roaster, satisfied to roast only for my family. I have used an IRoast2 every few days for three years and enjoyed it, even with its imperfections. I expect that this is going to be a satisfactory replacement when I get proficient with it. When the motor gives out it should not be a big problem to remove the motor and use the remaining product manually. I would recommend this product if you go into it with your eyes open. The competing products I am aware of in this price range are all so poorly reviewed by users that this may be a good alternative.

BUNN BTD Velocity Brew High Altitude 10-Cup Thermal Carafe Home Coffee Brewer, Black Review

BUNN BTD Velocity Brew High Altitude 10-Cup Thermal Carafe Home Coffee Brewer, Black
Average Reviews:

We live 8,000 ft above sea level in the Colorado Rockies and this coffee pot was the best investment we've ever made. Finally threw away our last disappointing Mr. Coffee and bought this high altitude Bunn 6 months ago. It makes the perfect cup of coffee every time. Since it is specifically designed for high altitude we find we use less than half the amount of coffee to brew a pot than we used to use and the results are far better. We live in a hard water area and elected to use distilled water to make coffee so the pot never gets a buildup of nasty minerals. Be sure to buy Bunn filters as they are taller than usual coffee filters and are designed to avoid splashing of grounds above the level of the filter. Would buy this pot all over again and highly recommend it for anyone living at altitude. Bunn rocks!!!

I bought this brewer in October. At first I was very happy with it. Then the carafe started leaking so bad it was ridiculous. I called Bunn a couple of days ago and the lady told me to wash the spout and the seal around the rim with Dawn dishwashing soap (she specifically said Dawn which I happened to have on hand) and the carafe would perform much better. She said that after a number of uses the oil from the coffee keeps the seal from sealing well. I hung up fully expecting to call her back in a few minutes. I washed the carafe as she suggested and it works like new again... no leaks!! If you have this pot, try it, you'll be amazed at the difference. Now I love this brewer again!

Keurig K-Cup Home Brewer Review

Like this product, but, wish the brewer made the larger cup size as the higher priced one. It is a good brewer though. Have had it for about a month or so. If you want the largest mug size, I advise to pay the extra money. I only use for a late
evening cup. I use my regular coffee maker for mornings. The K-Cups are pricy. You need to shop around for best price or use refillable Solofill. See my review on that.

Keurig B-70 B70 Platinum Single-Cup Home Brewing System Review

Keurig B-70 B70 Platinum Single-Cup Home Brewing System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

My wife's Christmas present this year is a Keurig B70 coffee maker. We have a B100 at work that I was very impressed by and we decided that a home machine would nicely fill the need when we might want a cup or two, but might not want to make a full pot.

Long story short: we love the machine. So far, our favorite coffee is Timothy's Kona Blend -- but we haven't tried more than a handful of the scores of varieties of coffees and teas available for the beast. We got the extra filter for when we want to grind and use our own coffee in the machine, but have not yet had the opportunity to try it yet. It is a nice option to have.

We'll still use our Zojirushi thermal carafe brewer when we need a full pot, but the Keurig is wonderful for lesser amounts. Highly recommended.

I learned today that one of the coffee roasters that supplies the K-cups, Green Mountain, just bought Keurig (an American company with a Dutch name). I hope this won't limit the variety of coffees available for the machines -- that would be a major bummer if other roasters bowed out and would cause me to pull my glowing recommendation.

UPDATE 7/30/07: The B70 died today after 8 months of yeoman service. A call to Keurig revealed that the symptoms matched a "bad element" (one would assume heating element). A replacement machine in on its way (arrival in 3-4 days). Keurig doesn't want the old machine back, just a part. Keurig customer service was extremely pleasant and professional. Assuming the replacement machine arrives in good form, the five star rating is intact. I do wonder if there is a generic problem with heating elements in this model -- I'll have to look through the newer reviews to see if I should worry.

UPDATE 1/12/11: The replacement B70 is still going strong 3.5 years later. Still very happy with the unit.
