Elektra MS Espresso Coffee Grinder With Copper/Brass Finish Review

Elektra MS Espresso Coffee Grinder With Copper/Brass Finish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

When I purchased this, I wanted a high quality burr grinder to complement my Italian retro copper and brass espresso maker.

Pros: It is beautifully made and very heavy and solid. It has a nice glass coffee bean holder. There's a heavy duty brass Elektra logo plaque, which enhances its retro appearance. I assume the grind was set perfectly during testing before it was boxed and shipped because the grind is fabulous leaving our espresso with a beautiful la crema. I can't address the variability of the grind because we haven't felt the need to adjust it in the last 3 months. It arrived securely and wonderfully packaged.

Cons: I assumed the doser was detachable. Unfortunately it isn't, and I think its chrome color, black plastic lid, and contemporary style detract somewhat from the retro appearance. In addition, you must grind several doses of espresso to get the doser to be full enough to accurately dispense single doses into a portafilter (then, however, they are perfectly sized). Another odd thing is that the plate on the bottom of the unit is attached to the inner workings rather than the copper body, and mine sits slightly crooked as a result. At $800, it seems a little strange to have to put a quarter under the edge to have it stand up straight.

Ok, that said, I'm very happy with the espresso I get using this grinder, happy with the quality of the manufacturing and the appearance overall, and would buy it again.

Miele : CVA4075SS 24" Plumbed Whole Bean/Ground Built-In Coffee System Review

Miele : CVA4075SS 24
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Had this coffee maker installed with my home remodel nearly seven years ago now. MORE than paid for itself MANY TIMES over (hey, nearly $5 a pop of your favorite brew adds up FAST).

Easy to care for. Only one problem since the installation was fixed with a quick call to VERY friendly and helpful Miele customer service. They walked me through fixing the problem (less than 15 minutes) and sent me a part replacement kit just in case the part needed replacing (it didn't, but I kept it just in case).

DURABLE is what surprised me; I use it at least 4-7 times daily more on the weekends without a hitch. (How many things do you use that often in a day, every day for seven years without a screw up?) It will not take "flavored" coffees (beans that have been coated in flavoring) as that will gum up the works, but then again who really wants gunk coated beans, anyway?

Of all the "toys" I bought for my new kitchen; this has been the most impressive.

Richard Sapper Espresso Coffee Maker Size: 6 Cup Review

Richard Sapper Espresso Coffee Maker Size: 6 Cup

I don't even drink coffee, but I got a similar-looking one for my wife a couple of years ago - looks the same except it doesn't have the black stripes around it. It's high-priced and I don't know why - but it's stainless steel, not aluminum, takes a high polish, nice looking. But the main thing is, my wife loves it - she has espresso twice a day, and for awhile she kept trying to use her Saeco machine, but it always needed expensive repairs and was kind of a hassle to use. For the last few months she's been using just this little pot, twice daily, it's fast and simple and works perfectly. There's no big production number required to get espresso into her system (that's good for me, too!). She can do without the crema, and she finds it makes as good or better espresso than she can buy anywhere. I could have gotten her a cheaper one that works just as well, probably, but this was a special gift so I didn't mind the extra cost. She loved that it's in MoMA. It's that kind of thing that makes a gift out of the ordinary.

9090/6 FM Size: 6 Cup Richard Sapper is a German industrial designer. He received a Compasso d'Oro industrial design award in 1959. Sapper partnered with Italian designer Marco Zanuso and were hired in 1959 as consultants to Brionvega, an Italian company trying to produce stylish electronics that would compete with products manufactured in Japan and Germany. They designed a series of radios and televisions that became enduring icons of an aesthetic known as techno-functionalism. One of their more notable designs was the rounded, compact and portable Doney 14 (1962), the first television to feature completely transistorized construction. Using the aesthetic of sculptural minimalism, the pair designed the compact folding Grillo telephone for Siemens and Italtel in 1965. The Grillo was one of the first telephones to put the dial and the earpiece on the same unit, and today is a featured display at New York's Museum of Modern Art. The 9090 was not only the first espresso coffee machine in our history, but it was also the first Alessi object designed for the kitchen after the 30s. It also gained us our first Compasso d'Oro Award (in 1979) and it is on display in the Permanent Design Collection at the MOMA in New York. The Espresso Coffee Maker was the first of our amphibious objects, those that can be used in the kitchen but are attractive enough to be used directly at the table. It proved that there was ample space on the market for good-looking coffee machines, and it spurred on almost all household goods manufacturers to try to imitate our lead. Along with Rossi's 9095, even after twenty years it remains one of Alessi's most popular coffee machines. Peugeot Nostalgie Hand Coffee Mill, Walnut Review

Peugeot Nostalgie Hand Coffee Mill, Walnut
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I have been grinding up my Sumatra beans for the past 20+ years (thank you, Peets!!) with the same little electric grinder and have been very content. THEN, I read about the wonders of hand grinding and considered that there may be something to these claims. But in all honesty, I bought this Peugeot grinder because it reminded me of one my grandmother used to have in her kitchen. So, I dutifully used my new grinder and was skeptical until I took my first sip - I didn't need a side-by-side taste comparison, that was one of the smoothest cups of coffee I've ever tasted. The difference was startling! I felt like I was finally tasting the fully measure of what Sumatra beans are supposed to be. I've been using my Peugeot grinder for about a month now, it is so worth the extra 3 minutes it takes to grind my beans. I have retired my trusty little electric grinder (I'm actually pretty amazed that this little machine has lasted all these years). I love my Peugeot grinder so much that I bought my brother one for Christmas!

Jura-Capresso 13332 Impressa J5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, Matte Black Review

Jura-Capresso 13332 Impressa J5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, Matte Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Where to begin? This machine can do it all, from a strong shot of espresso to a flawless cappuccino, all in under minute. If you can tie your shoes, you can use one of these machines.

I looked in to this machine after using an older Capresso model at a friend's house. I was always impressed by how easily and quickly he could make a variety of drinks for guests, not to mention the quality of their appearance and flavor.

This machine comes with two different frothing systems, one is a more traditional bullet style frother, while the other can automatically steam or froth milk. This is where the J5 really shines. In no time you can froth yourself milk that would make the most seasoned barista jealous, and then push a single button to instantly brew piping hot coffee.

The machine starts with whole beans of your choosing and grinds them just for the drink you are making. This ensures that you'll get the freshest tasting coffee cup after cup.

What I like most about this machine though is the variety of drinks it can make. If you have a guest over who isn't a big coffee drinker you can use the machine to make instant hot water for tea, or my favorite trick: run chocolate milk through the steamer for instant hot chocolate. Of course for the rest of us, the pressure brewing system in this machine will allow you to say goodbye to expensive coffee drinks, and become your own favorite barista.

I loved this since my brother first bought it. I have tried many lower priced imitators, but non lived up to the Capresso C3000. Now, several years later, I have inhereted his coffee machine. I still love it. It is demanding, asking you to add water, empty grinds, or even add coffee. But seriously, it is a great machine that custom brews a great cup of coffee and the biggest problem I find is it makes it to easy to drink a lot of coffee. If you take care of it it will take care of your coffee needs.

Capresso 153.04 C3000 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, with Pump-Auto Cappuccino System Review

Capresso 153.04 C3000 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, with Pump-Auto Cappuccino System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

We have owned several home espresso machines and this is by far the best one ever. The ability to froth milk automatically just before or just after making coffee or espresso is unique. In most other units it's necessary to purge the water system before steaming milk and then purging it again to regain brewing temperature. In this unit you just press the button and frothed milk foams out into your cup, and is pre-programmed to stop at the right moment. The milk unit can be removed and stored in a refrigerator and the parts are easy to clean. It even tells you when to run a cleaning or decalcifying session. Programable in English and several European languages. It's also easy to make hot cocoa by frothing chocolate milk. Electronic controls dose out the amount of coffee or espresso from a short shot of espresso (single or doppio) to a mug of coffee. It turns itself on and off and pre-measures the coffee you grind and the strength of your coffee. This is an electronic wizard that does lots more than brew a great cup of coffee. This is an ideal machine for an office or a household with a big entertainment kitchen.

Alessi Neapolitan Coffee Maker Review

Alessi Neapolitan Coffee Maker
Average Reviews:

I've had one of these elegant Alessi coffee makers, called a macchinetta napoletana, since the late 1980s. Beautiful to behold, and makes the loveliest coffee. As described in Alberto Alessi's book "The Dream Factory": "His [architect Riccardo Dalisi's] research into the Neapolitan Coffee Maker (1979-87, winning the 12th Compasso D'Oro) was the longest in our history: over the years it led to one book and over 200 prototypes in tin. Wearing a beret and and clothes straight out of a neo-realist film, continuously turning over new ideas and trying out new ways of making things work, Dalisi has not been an easy person to manage, but this was a very important project for us indeed. It enabled us to open up our manufacturing world even more to the conceptual experience of the artisan, it taught us to dilute our certainties in a fragile and poetic light, which is so necessary when working on extremely deep-rooted household rituals." Put that in your pot and brew it!

Gaggia MDF Coffee Grinder with Doser Review

Gaggia MDF Coffee Grinder with Doser
Average Reviews:

For $200 this coffee grinder sucks. It's missing nice/easy to add features, like rubber stoppers on the bottom!! Both hands are busy, one holding the espresso handle and one operating the doser and the machine slides all over the counter. Also the doser never worked on my machine. It never dispensed the correct amount of coffee...and the coffee that came out of the dispenser went everywhere. Plus the dispenser handle was less than smooth to pull. I hate this machine.

Product Description

The Gaggia MDF Grinder is a commercial grade burr grinder equal to those found in Europe's espresso bars and restaurants. Automatic dosing allows a premeasured amount of ground coffee to drop directly into the filter holder. Pull the lever once for one cup espresso, or twice for 2 cups. Precision-machined grinding burrs can be easily adjusted for 39 different degrees of fineness. The large hopper holds 10 ounces of coffee beans. Easy to use and perfect results are achieved each time. Please note that most grinders are tested at the manufacturer and coffee grounds may be found in the grinder as a result. Nescafe KP210250 Dolce Gusto Single-Serve Coffee Machine, Creme Review

Nescafe KP210250 Dolce Gusto Single-Serve Coffee Machine, Creme
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2KAMUCI09DZ0L I want to love this machine. If you are considering purchasing the Dolce Gusto machine I STRONGLY suggest you sample the coffee first (I think Sur La Table has demo machines). Here's what I like about the machine:
* The design is sleek.
* It's well made and sturdy.
* The machine heats the water up really fast- once you turn it you're ready to make coffee in well under a minute.
* The machine is incredibly easy to use. (see attached video for a demo of a cappuccino)
* No real cleanup required after each use.

Now for the bad...
* The machine comes with a latte macchiato glass, a cappuccino cup and saucer. Unfortunately the packaging was very poor (not enough bubble wrap) and the saucer arrived cracked.
* The coffee is horrible. As good as the physical machine is... it is only as good as the coffee it makes. All the milk based Dolce Gusto drinks are excessively sweet, taste artificial and have a ton of sugar and have anywhere from 3.5g-6g of fat.
*The non-milk drinks are very disappointing as well. Both the espresso and lungo aren't very strong and taste very average.

I have posted video demonstrations for each of the drinks in my reviews of :
* Cappuccino
* Espresso
* Chococino
* Caffe Lungo
* Latte Macchiato

Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer with Thermo Carafe Review

Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer with Thermo Carafe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Please get your coffee and sit though this review, it's a bit long. So many people and places rate this as the best drip coffee maker because of the ideal brew temperature and brew drip time. I spent more time on this review because I want to justify the expense of this coffeemaker. The bottom line is that to get the really best tasting coffee out of this expensive coffee maker, you may have to spend just a bit of time fussing with it. This includes finding the right amount of coffee to add, using filtered room temperature water, and I found as some people suggest that if you leave the brew basket top off and stir the coffee grinds during brewing (at least for the first minute when the water has filled the basket and the grinds are swimming in water) , you get even better tasting coffee (better flavor extraction). Also, unless I buy another thermal carafe specifically the Thermos Nissan 51 Ounce Stainless Steel Carafe, I should drink all the brewed coffee within the first hour. The included carafe just does not maintain the coffee at a decent temperature for more than a half hour, especially if you use the brew through lid. If the thermal carafe is to replace the need for a heating pad to keep the coffee warm, then I am disappointed that the carafe can't keep great brewed coffee hot for very long.

Note that the CDT and its original brother the KBT 741 leave ½ cup of water in the heating chamber after brewing. If you dry out your Technivorm (pour out any excess water and dry the reservoir) like I do, then you may wish to add a ½ cup of water to the chamber when brewing to compensate. Otherwise, it's only your first batch of coffee that may be a bit stronger.

The instructions recommend using fresh tap water (I use filtered water from a carbon block system). This does result in a brew temperature of 195-200°F degrees as measured using my Thermapen. As an experiment, I reused the heated water from the carafe to brew coffee (the water has not yet cooled to room temperature). Don't do it. This seems to confuse the Techivorm's heating element's thermostat and the brewing temperature drops to around 180°F degrees instead if the 190 to 200°F degrees if I start with room temperature water. And why did I reuse heated water? Why waste water? The instructions recommend "preheating the thermal carafe", likely so that the temperature of the brewed coffee does not cool below 190°F as it fills the thermal carafe.

What do I like about the CDT?
The coffee brewed from the Technivorm is more palatable so that I do not need to adulterate the coffee with any sweetener or creamer (if you use decent coffee beans). I don't have a connoisseur's palate but I also like to consider that I don't have a dead one either. Even when I brewed carafes of coffee using 10 year old Maxwell House coffee (year 2000 stash) I can tell a difference in taste between it from a CDT and my other coffee maker a Cuisinart DCC-450BK 4-Cup Coffeemaker with Stainless-Steel Carafe, Black. The coffee from the Cuisinart is harsher and bitter more likely because of the 170°F brew temperature although the brew time is about the same as the CDT (5 minutes). I wouldn't have believed the taste difference had I not brewed using both coffee makers. So if I use filtered water (at room temperature) and fresher quality coffee beans I will get better tasting brewed coffee from the Technivorm.
The very open reservoir design makes adding water into the reservoir a breeze (no one should make a mess pouring water into the reservoir).
The CDT's reservoir`s round shape makes it very easy for me to dry the reservoir with a kitchen towel. I wasn't sure about the KBT's square shape and keeping it as clean. The only difference between the CDT and the KBT 741 is the shape of the reservoir (and the added height of the CDT's reservoir to keep the same capacity as the KBT 741).
The CDT comes with a 4 foot long three prong power cord. I don't have any problems plugging in my CDT anywhere in my kitchen.

What are my disappointments?
The included thermal carafe is my big disappointment. While I know that the carafe is designed to be poured using a lid (whether the included lid or the optional brew through lid, both which work okay), how difficult would it have been to stamp a small V-shaped spout on the carafe? It would help me pour my coffee into my Thermos Nissan 16-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Bottle without spilling hot (and precious) coffee down the side of the thermos (yeah, I did have the carafe's top in place). After I brew my coffee and screw on the top onto the thermal carafe, the outside of the thermal carafe is about ten degrees warmer than my kitchen counter: this carafe is loosing too much heat! The 198-200°F degree coffee drops about 25° degrees after an hour with the regular lid or 10°F loss per half hour with the brew through lid. Oh, and this is where I preheat the carafe with hot water! The carafe just looses too much heat. Maybe Technivorm could have Thermos Nissan make their thermal carafes? I have a travel size Thermos Nissan that I use for nursing my coffee at work. Even up to eight hours after brewing I still enjoy my coffee's hot to warm temperature (without preheating)! The Technivorm carafe has no information on where it is made.

UPDATE: March 8, 2010: I contacted the seller complaining about my carafe's inability to keep the coffee hot. I was sent a replacement carafe under warranty (no charge). BIG DIFFERENCE. The carafe looses about only six to seven degrees per hour instead of the 25° with my original carafe (with the regular lid) and about 12°F when using the brew thru lid. So my coffee is still hot for at least four hours after brewing. So make sure your carafe is not defective by testing it. The box the replacement carafe came in says it's made in "Amerongen-Holland".

PROS:
The coffee brewed from the Technivorm is more palatable so that I do not need to adulterate the coffee with any sweetener or creamer (assuming you use decent coffee beans) and filtered water.

The large reservoir opening is easy to add water without spilling and also make it easy to dry with a kitchen towel.

It comes with a 4 foot power cord so you should be able to plug your CDT nearly anywhere in your kitchen.

Bottom line. Yes, I will keep it. Even with its faults', the Technivorm still makes it easy to make a great tasting cup of coffee, especially if you drink your coffee black (I've become a black coffee convert).

CONS:
The CDT (and KBT 741) leaves ½ cup of water in the heating chamber. You may wish to add a ½ cup of water to compensate if you empty and dry out your Technivorm after each use.

For the cost, it needs to come with a better thermal carafe that can keep coffee hot for a longer time (make sure you test yours: it should only lose about 6-7°F an hour with the regular lid. And can Technivorm at least stamp a pouring beak on the carafe for even easier pouring, especially when pouring into a travel thermos?
